Two titans of college football meet in beautiful Las Cruces when New Mexico State hosts UMass on Saturday night. These two teams may not actually be college football powers, but they will step into the Week 0 spotlight with a primetime game on ESPN.
The Aggies are listed as seven-point favorites on FanDuel Sportsbook and that line feels right. NMSU was better than UMass last year and that shouldn’t change now that the Aggies have home field advantage.
New Mexico State finished 7-6 last year with a bowl win over Bowling Green, a significant step up from the Aggies’ usually level of success. Head coach Jerry Kill enters his second season at NMSU and has the benefit of a returning starting quarterback with Diego Pavia back for his junior season. Pavia led the Aggies to five of their seven wins down the stretch in 2022 and adds a duel-threat capability after rushing for 508 yards and six touchdowns last year.
He also led NMSU to a 23-13 road win over UMass last October, which happened to be the Aggies first road victory since 2018. That was one of 11 losses for the Minutemen in 2022, and based on what we saw last year, it’s hard to see this matchup playing out differently now that UMass has to go on the road. The Minutemen are rebuilding as a program in the second season under head coach Don Brown, and I don’t see everything coming together for them tonight.
