Originally slated to start yesterday’s game, Kodai Senga was given an extra day of rest. When Senga takes the mound, expect few balls to be put in play. Opposing batters are hitting a mere .209 against him, and he has recorded an impressive 101 strikeouts in 81.2 innings. However, his struggles with walks are evident, having issued 46 walks so far, ranking him in the sixth percentile for walk percentage.
Walks have been a major hurdle for Senga this season, leading to him allowing three or more runs in seven starts, with five of those games involving three or more walks. Consequently, his WHIP stands at 1.35. Despite this, Senga has shown resilience in working out of trouble, maintaining a respectable 3.53 ERA and a 3.88 xERA.
In his first season in the United States, Senga has found comfort at Citi Field. He boasts a 2.64 ERA in eight home starts, while his road starts have yielded a 4.58 ERA. The Arizona Diamondbacks have the potential to exploit Senga’s road struggles, relying on their offense to compensate, which may be more favorable away from Citi Field.
On the road, the Mets have a .248 batting average and average 4.75 runs per game. Comparatively, they have a .231 batting average and average 4.15 runs per game at home.
As a team, the Diamondbacks have hit 98 home runs and stolen 82 bases, showcasing their ability to manufacture runs. This could prove crucial against a pitcher like Senga, as the Diamondbacks rank 10th in the Major Leagues in walk percentage.
If Senga encounters command issues early on, a few walks could position runners for scoring opportunities due to Arizona’s base-stealing prowess. Even if the D-backs fail to capitalize, the walks will inflate Senga’s pitch count, potentially leading to his removal from the game in five innings or less.
Taking the mound for Arizona is Tommy Henry, who aims to continue his recent positive momentum. After initially posting a 5.00 ERA in his first five starts, Henry has lowered his ERA to 3.48 over his last eight appearances, including seven starts.
In terms of bullpen performance, the Diamondbacks hold a slightly better ERA at 4.07, ranking 19th in the MLB, while the Mets rank 21st with a bullpen ERA of 4.25.
During Arizona’s last run, the bases were loaded, forcing the Mets to bring in David Robertson to close out the game. Robertson threw only nine pitches, while Adam Ottavino and Brooks Raley threw 19 and 18 pitches, respectively.
Manager Buck Showalter may be hesitant to utilize both Ottavino and Raley on consecutive days. If Senga fails to provide sufficient length, tough decisions await Showalter.
