NextImg:Falcons request interview with Antonio Pierce as Raiders pressure grows

Antonio Pierce is in high demand in the NFL head coaching circuit, with the NFL Network reporting that the Atlanta Falcons have requested permission to interview him for their vacant position.

That’s in addition to the interview Pierce had Saturday with the Tennessee Titans, who unexpectedly fired Mike Vrabel following the season.

And then there’s the job Pierce finished the season with interim head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Pierce, the former Giants linebacker, went 5-4 after replacing Josh McDaniels with the Raiders halfway through the season.

He also won over star defensive end Maxx Crosby, who, according to NFL Media, could explore a trade request if Pierce isn’t given the head job on a permanent basis in Las Vegas.

Complicating matters is the potential availability of Jim Harbaugh, who just led Michigan to the national championship, but was embroiled in controversy- and suspended twice- during the Wolverines’ championship season.

If Harbaugh does want to return to the NFL, where he coached the San Francisco 49ers for four seasons from 2011-14, he will be a hot commodity.

The Raiders, according to the NFL Network, “continue to weigh” going after Harbaugh, who was the team’s quarterbacks coach in 2002-03, his first coaching job in the NFL after he retired as a player in 2001.

But Harbaugh’s return to the NFL is not a sure thing, since Michigan, his alma mater, is trying to negotiate a new contract with him.

As for Pierce, he has plenty of high-profile competition on the job market, with not only Vrabel available, but also Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll among former head coaches, as well as Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson expected to be seriously considered around the league.
