NextImg:Exclusive | The NYC home of Met conductor James Levine — who was fired over sex abuse allegations — asks $10M

The Upper West Side home of the late maestro James Levine, who led the Metropolitan Opera for 40 years until he was fired following an investigation that revealed a history of sex abuse, has listed for $10 million.

Property records show the seller is Levine’s widow, the former oboist Suzanne E. Thomson, who married Levine a year before his death at age 77 in 2021. She could not be reached for comment.

This prewar co-op, an eighth-floor residence at the famed San Remo, which stands at 145 Central Park West, is the home they shared.

Thomson was Levine’s longtime companion who took care of him after he was fired in disgrace following a Met investigation. It concluded there was credible evidence that Levine had “engaged in sexually abusive and harassing conduct toward vulnerable artists in the early stages of their careers.”

Levine sued for defamation — settling out of court for a reported $3.5 million.

Several young men alleged the abuse began when they were teenagers. “I began seeing a 41-year-old man when I was 15, without really understanding I was really ‘seeing’ him,” the unnamed accuser said to police at the time. “It nearly destroyed my family and almost led me to suicide.”

Levine, a child prodigy who first performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at age 10, served as music or artistic director at the Met from 1976 to 2016, conducting more than 2,500 performances during his tenure. He was suspended in 2017 — during which time he held an emeritus role — after The Post revealed the sexual abuse allegations that had begun in the 1960s.

The four-bedroom, 3.5-bath home features more than 65 feet of prime frontage along Central Park West.

The building has a storied history. Steve Jobs once owned and renovated a penthouse duplex, but sold it to U2’s Bono before moving in, according to reports. Composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim grew up in the San Remo. Past residents also include Demi Moore, Mary Tyler Moore and Diane Arbus.

At 4,700 square feet, the residence opens to a large entrance gallery that leads to three south-facing bedrooms with ensuite baths. Three of the home’s main rooms face the park: a corner living room, a library and a formal dining room. There’s also a large chef’s kitchen with two pantry areas, and a staff room or fourth bedroom. Design details include high ceilings, hardwood herringbone floors, original steel cabinets, custom built-ins and plenty of storage space.

The building, whose twin towers rose where the San Remo Hotel once stood in 1891, dates to 1930. Construction began in 1929, the year of the stock market crash.

The listing broker is Catherine Harding, of Compass, who didn’t respond to a request for comment.
