PORT ST. LUCIE — Pete Alonso isn’t sure how much he can improve from a physical standpoint as a first baseman, but he knows he can work smarter.

Upon reporting to camp this spring, the Mets slugger, who returned to the team on a two-year contract worth $54 million, spoke of his desire to eliminate the miscalculations that led to errors last season.

To that end, he plans to take a more conservative approach with throws.

“Realistically, the easy thing is to look at everything from last year, and footwork was good, glovework was good for the most part,” Alonso told The Post. “But honestly, I think that my throws, whether it’s forcing something that is not there or forcing the great play to happen, where probably it’s like a high-risk play, let’s take the ball instead of trying to force something.”
