Major League Soccer must scrap its salary cap if it is to challenge major European leagues such as the England’s Premier League or Italy’s Serie A, New York City FC legend Andrea Pirlo told The Post.

Pirlo, who won 116 caps for Italy spent just over two years in The Big Apple before he retired from soccer in 2017, said MLS has “grown a lot” since his stint in the United States began a decade ago.

The midfielder, who left his position as head coach of Serie B side Sampdoria in August, warned MLS needs a major overhaul of its strict spending regulations to keep up with Europe’s soccer giants.

“They need to change some of the rules, such as the salary cap, and align with the European leagues if they want to be able to compete,” Pirlo said in an exclusive interview on Saturday.
