Former NFL offensive lineman Gosder Cherilus has apologized after he was arrested and accused of urinating on a fellow passenger on a transatlantic flight this past weekend.

Cherilus was aboard a flight from Boston to Dublin that ended up getting routed back to Boston’s Logan International Airport after the alleged disturbance.

In a post on X, Cherilus provided an explanation and an apology for what happened.

“I’d like to address the media reports about me that surfaced today regarding a situation that occurred onboard a flight to Ireland this past weekend,” Cherilus wrote.

“The flight was unexpectedly delayed for approximately four hours, and it did not take off until after 12:30 AM. In preparation for the unexpected overnight flight, I took a sleeping medication that I don’t normally use, which resulted in behavior that is not representative of my character, and I would like to apologize to the passengers and flight crew.”

Cherilus played right tackle for the Lions, Colts and Buccaneers in an NFL career that spanned from 2008, when he was a first-round pick of Detroit, through 2016.

He started 116 career regular-season games and appeared in 16 more.

“Delta flight 154 from Boston to Dublin on August 17 returned to Boston Logan due to an unruly customer and was met by law enforcement,” a spokesperson for Delta told Boston 25 News in a statement this weekend.

“Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful behavior and will cooperate with law enforcement to that end. We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travel.”

Passengers were rebooked for a flight that departed Boston on Sunday and landed in Dublin on Monday.
