NextImg:Ex-Giant Lorenzo Carter abruptly retires months after signing with Titans

The Titans’ depth on the edge just got even thinner.

Just a day before the Titans’ training camp began, veteran edge rusher Lorenzo Carter decided to retire, the team announced Tuesday.

“He notified us yesterday that he will be retiring,” Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi said. “We wish him well.”

Giants fans will remember the 29-year-old as the team selected Carter in the third round of the 2018 draft with the 66th overall pick.

Carter, a Georgia native, was rated as a five-star recruit out of high school and elected to stay home for his collegiate career as he played four seasons for the Georgia Bulldogs.

He appeared in 54 games and racked up 165 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and seven forced fumbles.

In his senior season, Georgia went 13-2, winning the SEC title and the Rose bowl while Carter had career-highs in tackles and tackles for loss at 61 and eight, respectively.

Upon being selected by the Giants, many were intrigued by his unique skillset and athletic upside.

He wound up playing in 15 games in his rookie season, starting in two, making 43 tackles and four sacks.

He would play three more seasons with the Giants and start in 31 of his 34 games.

His best season with New York came in 2021 when he totaled 50 tackles, five sacks and came down with his first career interception.

Carter moved on to his hometown Falcons after four seasons with the Giants, signing a one-year, $3.5 million deal with Atlanta before the 2022 season.

The 6-foot-5, 264-pound edge rusher started in all 17 games and tallied a career-high 58 tackles in his first Falcons season, earning him a fresh two-year, $9 million deal with the team.

Carter signed with the Titans this offseason, where he took part in the team’s offseason program, including OTAs and minicamp before retiring Tuesday.

Training camp begins Wednesday for Tennessee as the team enters the campaign with Arden Key, Dre’Mont Jones, Femi Oladejo, Jaylen Harrell, Ali Gaye, Titus Leo and Desmond Evans as the current edge rushers on the roster.
