NextImg:Even Trea Turner’s mom was booing him during rough Phillies start

Trea Turner played so poorly across the first two months this season that even one of his most loyal supporters — his mother — started booing him.

The shortstop first revealed that following a May 24 game against the Diamondbacks, and he confirmed the comment during a recent interview with USA TODAY.

Turner hit .236 when the calendar flipped to June, including a stretch of five hitless games across the final eight of the month, but he has compiled a .316 average over his last nine games to bring that number to .247 — though that’d still mark the lowest average across a full season in his career.

“I don’t know what it was,” Turner told USA TODAY. “I had already made a decent amount of money, so it wasn’t a money thing. I’ve played on playoff teams. I’ve played in big markets. Personally, I think getting traded is harder than free agency.”

Recently, though, Turner has started to resemble the type of player that won the World Series in 2019 with the Nationals and became a coveted piece that the Dodgers acquired in 2021 and the Phillies signed last offseason with an 11-year, $300 million deal.

“If you want to make yourself feel better, you can come up with all kinds of excuses, but I just didn’t play well,” Turner said. “It’s that simple.”

Surrounded by reporters in front of a Phillies’ background May 24, following a win against the Diamondbacks where he went 1-for-5 and his average dipped to .250, Turner was asked about the boos from the Citizen Bank Park crowd.

“My mom prepared me for anything in this game and in this world,” Turner said, according to Sports Illustrated. “She was tough on me from an early age and not much fazes me.”

And then Turner was asked if his mother booed him — and the shortstop revealed that she actually had that day.

“She actually texted me and said, ‘Good game, except for your fourth at-bat,’” Turner told reporters. “And I said, ‘Yeah, not a good one.’ And she said, ‘I was booing you.’”

A rough stretch continued for Turner, even after those comments.

He went hitless in four of his next six games to close the month.

But then he started June with hits in his first three games, and a four-hit performance — his most in a game this season — followed against the Tigers on June 5.

The Phillies have won eight of their last 10 games this month to move over .500 at 37-34, and they trail the Braves by eight games in the NL East standings as of Sunday afternoon.
