Um, spoiler alert?
As the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery closed on in its apex on Monday night — the Columbus Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks remained as the teams with a shot at drafting consensus top prospect Connor Bedard — NHL insider and ex-Rangers goalie Kevin Weekes revealed a little too much as ESPN cut to commercial.
“And there’s our first change in the order, with Columbus dropping to third,” Weekes said. “So now either Anaheim or Chicago will select first overall.
“Anaheim has never selected first overall and the last time Chicago drafted No. 1 was when they took future Hall of Fame Patrick Kane. We’ll be back after this.”
Only NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly hasn’t yet flipped over the card sharing that information with viewers.
When ESPN came back from the break — which also included some highlights of Bedard, lauded as a generational talent — the network showed Daly officially revealing the Blue Jackets’ placard for the No. 3 pick.
Chicago, an Original Six team and a major media market for the NHL, won the top pick.
The franchise came into the lottery with the third-highest odds after an audacious tank during the 2023 season that saw the Blackhawks trade Kane to the Rangers and captain Jonathan Toews play what was likely his final game with the team.
The Anaheim Ducks, with the NHL’s worst regular-season record, had the best chance at the top pick, but settled for No. 2 overall.
Columbus went into the lottery with the second-best chance to take home No. 1 overall, but found out a little too early that the lottery balls didn’t bounce their way.
“We’re going to get a great player at 3, there’s no question about it in my mind,” Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen said on a video call with reporters. “Everyone wants to win the lottery, then everything is your control, and obviously everybody’s talked about a special player at the top of the rankings. But we’re confident that we’re going to get a big difference-maker at 3.”
