NextImg:‘Equity’ sickens US medicine, Trump sides with Disney and other commentary

“The post-George Floyd racial reckoning hit the field of medicine like an earthquake,” warns Heather Mac Donald at Newsweek. “Virtually every major medical organization” has “embraced the idea that medicine is an inequity-producing enterprise.” That’s led to “identity-based preferences throughout the medical profession,” i.e. “discarding traditional standards of merit in order to alter the demographic characteristics of their profession,” including the “United States Medical Licensing Exam” itself. Since January 2022, that test’s first step has “been graded on a pass-fail basis,” no matter that “struggles with core science concepts” will harm “clinical performance.” “The result will be a declining quality of medical care and a curtailment of scientific progress.”

“More than 190,000 immigrants were arrested while crossing the southern border in March, a 500% increase from President Donald Trump’s last March in office,” report the Washington Examiner’s editors. Yet when President Biden ends his use of Title 42 to turn back migrants next month, things will get “much worse, and fast.” Daily apprehensions are expected to double, for “a record-high 400,000 immigrants” detained each month. Then “the plan is to just let them all in.” And though “the vast majority” will “eventually lose their asylum claims, almost none” will ever be deported. And many will “end up receiving welfare benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.” No wonder “even blue cities such as New York” have been “pleading with Biden to do something.”

Looking at county-level “migration data from mid-2020 through mid-2022,” the Issues & Insights editorial board discovers an exodus of nearly 2.6 million from Biden-voting counties to Trump ones. “More than 61% of the counties that voted for Biden in 2020 lost population, while 65% of Trump-supporting counties gained population,” and that trend holds even for red counties in blue states and vice-versa. “Will this mass migration lead to an even more divided country, with people increasingly relocating to be with their ideological brethren?” Or could the exodus from “leftist enclaves lead to a weakening of the undue influence a few elitist urban areas have on national politics?” It’ll be the latter “only if these American migrants understand why they are moving and can be convinced to leave their failed politics behind.”

Ex-President Donald Trump “these days attacks Republicans more than Democrats,” grumbles The Wall Street Journal editorial board after he “sided with the woke Mickey Mouse to score points over” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Trump fumed on Truth Social, “Disney’s next move will be the announcement that no more money will be invested in Florida because of the Governor,” and “they could even announce a slow withdrawal” in response to the gov’s “unnecessary” “political STUNT.” “You’d think the former president would be critical of Disney’s woke turn,” the editors note, “but his only abiding political conviction is personal advantage.” One thing is certain: “Nobody emerges from this looking good.”

“We have looked the other way as opioid addiction and abuse in the U.S. has gone from zero to a grotesque and infinite epidemic,” thunders Creators’ Salena Zito. Fentanyl’s even killing infants, as opioid ODs claim 1,500 lives a week — “yet we do nothing.” China makes the main ingredients found in fentanyl and Mexican cartels “are happy to produce the drug” and smuggle it into the United States. “It makes no sense that this White House has not done something serious to call all of this out publicly, telling both China and Mexico unequivocally that this ends now.” “Fentanyl is poisoning babies, teenagers and adults,” while those “who were elected to protect us have done the opposite.” “When does the Biden administration say that enough is enough?”
