Comedian, writer, and former Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. was caught by fans sending a “low” key message to the powers that be who passed him over to be the next Daily Show host during Trevor Noah’s Emmys acceptance speech tonight — and Wood’s already taken to X to both confirm his subtle plea as well as laugh it off. Eagle-eyed viewers noticed that Wood was mouthing the words, “Please hire a host,” a not-so-subtle jab at the fact that the iconic comedy show has been operating with a revolving door of would-be successors to Noah for almost a year. Wood was once championed by many fans as the obvious next choice, but departed the show in October 2023 amid rumors Hassan Minhaj was close to securing the bag.
X (aka Twitter) user Ryan Williams initially caught Wood’s request and shared it with the comment, “We see you @roywoodjr at the #Emmys mouthing “Please hire a hose” during the @Trevornoah Comedy Central acceptance speech.”
The post has since gone so viral as to warrant this quippy response from the comic himself: “chill fam I was trying to do that in the low “
Comedy fans know that Roy Wood Jr. left The Daily Show back in October 2023, after eight years of killing it on the show, and waiting in the wings for Comedy Central to pass the baton to him.
More to come…
