If you didn’t get a chance to see the latest Pixar movie in theaters, good news: Elio is coming to digital platforms to buy and rent tomorrow.
Directed by Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina; with a screenplay written by Julia Cho, Mark Hammer, and Mike Jones; Elio is a new, original animated movie about an 11-year-old boy who successfully makes contact with aliens, gets beamed into space, and accidentally becomes the ambassador for planet Earth. In other words, every little boy’s dream come true!
Newcomer Yonas Kibreab stars as the voice of Elio, while other voice actors in the Elio cast include Zoe Saldaña, Remy Edgerly, Brad Garrett, Jameela Jamil, and Shirley Henderson. Elio got mixed reviews and was not a big hit for Pixar, making around $147.6 million at the worldwide box office. But, perhaps more audiences will want to watch the movie at home.
That said, before you spend $30 to watch Elio on digital, you should know that we expect to see Elio streaming free on Disney Plus soon.
Beginning on Tuesday, August 19 at 12 a.m. Eastern Time (which is also August 18 at 9 p.m. Pacific Time), Elio will be available to buy digitally on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie costs $29.99 to buy, and $24.99 to rent.
Elio will also be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on September 9. The digital and DVD release will come with a gag reel, deleted scenes, Pixar Easter Eggs, making-of featurettes and more. (Bonus features may vary, depending on which service or product you use to purchase the film.)
Elio is not yet streaming on any subscription streaming services, but because it is a Disney movie, we do expect to see Elio streaming on Disney+ soon.
Disney+ offers a number of subscription options, so you can find the one that works for you. With ads, a subscription costs $9.99/month; without ads, it’s $15.99/month or $159.99/year.
There are also Disney+ bundles with Hulu, Max, and ESPN+, so you can subscribe to up to three services at once and save over 40% every month. The bundles are available in a few different configurations, starting at $10.99/month for Disney+ and Hulu with ads, and going up to $29.99/month for Disney+, Hulu, and Max ad-free.
Elio will likely stream on Disney+ in the next month or so, because it is a Disney movie. All the new Disney theatrical movies end up streaming on Disney+, often about three to six months after opening in theaters.
Another recent Disney movie, Lilo and Stitch, was released on premium video-on-demand about two months after opening in theaters, and will begin streaming on Disney+ a little over three months after opening in theaters on September 3. If Elio follows a similar release strategy, you may see Elio streaming on Disney+ around late September or early October 2025.
That said, the Elio Disney+ release date has not yet officially been announced. This is all guesswork, so take it with a grain of salt. For now, if you want to watch Elio at home, you can buy or rent a digital copy of the movie.
