The nation’s largest police department officially has a new leader.

<a href="https://nypost.com/2023/07/16/edward-caban-to-stay-nypd-commissioner-sources/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Edward Caban</a>&nbsp;was announced as the NYPD’s first Hispanic police commissioner Monday morning.

The appointment by Mayor Adams came more than a month after Keechant Sewell&nbsp;<a href="https://nypost.com/2023/06/12/nypd-commissioner-keechant-sewell-resigning-after-nearly-a-year-and-a-half-on-the-job/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">suddenly resigned from the top post&nbsp;</a>after a year and a half.

Caban, 55, had previously served as first deputy police commissioner under Sewell, and was elevated to acting commissioner following her June 12 departure.

The Bronx native’s appointment was set to be announced by officials at the NYPD’s 40th precinct station house in Mott Haven at a 10 a.m. news conference.
