Even Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney still can’t get their own names right.
The two stars, whose painstakingly similar names have caused comical confusion for quite some time now, have continued the legacy of their name-induced tongue twister on the SAG-AFTRA picket line.
Deadline has been sharing live coverage of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike on their Twitter page as they interview celebrity picketers about why they are striking. Yesterday afternoon (July 20), McDermott and Mulroney graced the outlet’s feed.
As the two began to introduce themselves, McDermott mistook himself for Mulroney, to which the latter replied, “no, you’re Dylan McDermott.”
Their name conflation became a sensation on Saturday Night Live, with a hilarious 2012 skit featuring Bill Hader, Jay Pharoah, Kenan Thompson, Jamie Fox, and a special appearance from Mulroney himself.
The skit follows a game show hosted by Hader called “Dylan McDermott or Dermot Mulroney,” where three contestants are shown a picture of one of the two actors, and then have to guess which of the two “Dermot” names it is. Mulroney eventually enters for a special round, and holds up a picture of McDermott next to his face, ultimately coming to the conclusion that he had mixed up his own identity with McDermott’s.
The two took advantage of their name mix-up when Mulroney guest-starred on McDermott’s FOX comedy LA to Vegas a few years later in 2018, per TV Line.
As seen in Deadline’s video, McDermott and Mulroney are both striking in order to prompt just negotiations between their unions and the AMPTP.
“What’s fair is fair,” Mulroney said, “and we have simple proposals that are being ignored right now,” which he deemed “disturbing.”
McDermott added, “it’s time for wages to increase,” saying, “It’s time for more residuals, and it’s time to protect ourselves from AI.”
