Peacock‘s The Traitors is not a show that rewards nobility, in any sense of the word. Actual British nobles, like this year’s contestant Lord Ivar Mountbatten, get ruthlessly lumped in with American reality TV stars, while any attempt of civility, courage, or kindness is often rewarded with “murder” by the hooded cabal of “Traitors” working to undermine the “Faithfuls” of the show’s cast. So it’s been almost nice to see that at least one prominent Faithful on The Traitors is stepping into the role of hero this early on in Season 3.

Dylan Efron — perhaps best known as Zac Efron‘s brother — has already established himself as the one Faithful with the ability to sniff out a Traitor. His early inkling that super popular Bob the Drag Queen was secretly working for the Dark Side put him in danger, but wound up being correct. Between his no drama approach to the competition, clever detective work, and dreamboat b-roll, Dylan might be the closest thing to Prince Charming to be found in host Alan Cumming‘s Scottish castle in The Traitors Season 3. The only hiccup? He’s now in the clutches of the most treacherous Traitor there is: “Boston” Rob Mariano.

The Traitors is an international phenomenon, first originating in the Netherlands as De Verraders, and now super-popular everywhere, including the UK and Australia. The American version of the game has differentiated itself already as an award-winning hit for Peacock with its fabulous host, Alan Cumming, and choice to fill the game with already famous reality show superstars. This motley crew of Bravo celebs, Big Brother and Survivor “gamers,” The Challenge winners, and other reality show notables compete in challenges to wrack up a massive pool of prize money. The real game, though, is in figuring out who the “Traitors” are lurking in plain sight.

TRAITORS EPISODE 1 BOSTON ROB REVEAL

So far, The Traitors Season 3 has been giving outsized priority to the “gamers” in the cast. Housewives Dorinda Medley and Chanel Ayan were the first to be killed off by The Traitors, Survivor legend “Boston” Rob Mariano was one of three games added to the cast in Episode 2, and the challenges have all gone out of their way to reward ruthlessness over camaraderie. When “Boston” Rob joined RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Bob the Drag Queen, Survivor starlet Carolyn Wiger, and Big Brother‘s Danielle Reyes in the Traitors’ turret, it seemed like the Faithfuls were doomed. No one had managed to hone in on a Traitor without immediately falling under the axe…no one except Dylan Efron.

Dylan figured out before anyone else that Bob the Drag Queen was using his popularity and charisma to control the conversation at the all-important roundtables. While no one initially was brave enough to follow Dylan’s hunch, a miscalculation from Bob himself during The Traitors Season 3 Episode 4 “I Will Bury You Under the Sand” flipped “Boston” Rob against his fellow Traitor. Rob soon cozied up to Dylan, promising to whip the votes necessary to oust his biggest competition for control of the Traitors. Rob’s explosive choice to accuse Bob of being a Traitor at the roundtable not only cinched the Drag Queen’s exit, but also made great reality TV.

Of course, “Boston” Rob wouldn’t have been able to launch into such a persuasive case against Bob the Drag Queen without Dylan earnestly setting the table for the argument.

At first glance, Dylan Efron seems an unlikely Traitors standout. His one big claim to reality TV fame is appearing alongside brother Zac on the Netflix docuseries Down to Earth with Zac Efron. His Instagram is full of travel porn pics of his adventures and adorable snapshots of his playtime with younger siblings Olivia and Henry. He doesn’t have oodles of experience outwitting his fellow players or even a history of sharing his dating life on the cameras. Dylan Efron seems to be just an easy-going handsome guy with a famous brother and a penchant for globe-trotting.

Dylan Efron is also an admitted reality TV megafan and that’s the edge that he’s brought with him into Peacock’s The Traitors.

Armed with a lifetime’s knowledge of watching how reality competitions shake out, Dylan was able to come to the early round tables with the kind of clear-eyed perception that wasn’t shaped by his own personal biases. It’s how he zeroed in on Bob the Drag Queen. Likewise, he’s not had to resort to a style of gameplay built for the cameras. He’s approached everything in an honorable way, never making things personal for the sake of petty drama. It’s refreshing when other contestants shamelessly have brought their own grudges into the game — and it emphasizes how The Traitors is supposed to be a game.

Of course, Dylan’s noble form of gameplay may yet come back to bite him in the butt. Last week’s installment of The Traitors ended with Dylan entering an unholy alliance with noneother than “Boston” Rob. Dylan’s thought process is that the consummate gamer must be a Faithful, worthy of total trust. Hopefully for Dylan, though, Wes Bergmann’s theory that “Boston” Rob must be a Traitor gains momentum in The Traitors Episode 5 and beyond.

We would hate to see The Traitors’s “Prince Charming” Dylan Efron (and his toned abs) led astray just as the hunt was heating up.

The Traitors Season 3 Episode 5 premieres on Peacock tonight at 9 PM ET.
