Good things come to those who wait and surely 33-year-old Drew Maggi is on the brink of a good thing.
After 1,155 games and 13 seasons, the Double A infielder was informed Saturday that he was being sent to join the Pittsburgh Pirates.
This will be a second chance for Maggi, as he was close to making his major league debut before when the Twins promoted him to join the taxi squad in 2021 because Rob Refsnyder sustained an injury, but he didn’t get the chance to fulfill that dream at the time and didn’t appear in a game before he went back to the minors.
Callix Crabbe, the rookie manager of the Double-A Eastern League’s Altoona Curve, announced he would be promoting his first player to the major leagues, which quickly made for an emotional moment inside the clubhouse.
“Some of us have had the chance to be in the major leagues and it was for one day. And there is going to be some of us [that] are gonna get a chance to take that one day and turn into one plus,” Crabbe said in a clip shared on the Pirates social media.
“And so it is with great pleasure that I get to promote my first person to the major leagues and someone that is tremendously important to this group and someone that exemplifies grit.”
Crabbe touched on three words the club values: perspective, choice, and grit, and explained how Maggi resembled each of those and will need to do so in his next step.
To which Maggi responded with a face full of shock that slowly dipped down to hold in his head in his hands in disbelief.
Soon a “Holy s–t” followed and a “Let’s f–king go!”
Before the Pirates game against the Reds on Sunday, they selected Maggi’s contract from Double-A Altoona and transferred Bryan Reynolds to the bereavement list.
To make room for the infielder on the roster, Pittsburgh transferred Ji-Man Choi to the 60-day injured list.
At 21, Maggi was signed by the Pirates after leaving Arizona State University and a decade and some change later, he Maggi will sport the black and gold with the No. 39, which was made famous by former Pirates All-Star outfielder Dave Parker.
Last season with the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians, Maggi posted a .219/.276/.323 slash line, along with eight RBIs over 96 at-bats.
