The novelty of Drew Barrymore‘s intimate interview style has worn off for some viewers of The Drew Barrymore Show, who slammed her as “creepy” and “cringey” for getting a little too touchy-feely with Oprah Winfrey in a new clip from the hit daytime talk show.
Ahead of today’s episode, in which Winfrey will appear as a guest, Barrymore shared a sneak peek of her interview with the veteran journalist on Instagram.
In the video, the duo bond over the way they interact with live audiences. But viewers couldn’t help but notice Barrymore holding Winfrey’s hand tightly to her chin with one hand and carefully caressing the OWN Network CEO’s arm with her other.
“Something that I learned about you, because I didn’t know this detail, was that you would spend time with the audience outside of the show you were filming,” Barrymore says in the clip. “And one thing that I’ve done is spend time with the audience every day.”
Winfrey calls audience interaction “necessary,” before adding, “My crew used to be like, ‘Oh my god, how much time is she going to spend talking to that audience?! Would she please let the audience go so we can let the next audience in?!'”
While Barrymore was once praised for getting up close and personal with her guests, many social media users have seemingly had a change of heart after seeing her clip with Winfrey.
“Drew, everyone doesn’t want their hands held boo,” one commented under the Instagram post, while another added, “She’s really creeping me out now. It’s just [too] weird.”
A third person said, “As much I love Drew.. I’ll stick to watching her in movies. She comes across as overbearing and over the top and that seems fake to me … it’s all too cringey!!!”
Someone else wrote, “Oprah’s body language says it all. Drew is holding on too much. Oprah is trying to release her hand from Drew’s grip. Drew is just too creepy and needy.”
Other fans, however, were quick to defend the actress.
“Dang, these comments are all rude AF,” one user wrote. “Drew Barrymore is so down to earth and chill, so it boggles my mind that her followers are judgmental twatwaffles. There are a whole lotta people here having a bad day, apparently.”
Another added, “This is why we love you,” while someone else said, “I don’t think Oprah is used to people holding her like this in public but I love Drew for it.”
