Drew Barrymore has no problem watching (or crying over) her own movies. In a new video posted to Instagram earlier today, the actress can be seen sobbing while rewatching her iconic rom-com The Wedding Singer.
Barrymore — who starred opposite Adam Sandler in the 1998 movie — is in hysterics from the moment the video starts as she gives a shout-out to the man she previously referred to as her “cinematic soulmate.”
“We made such a good movie. I love you so much. Happy New Year,” Barrymore tells Sandler in the video through tears, before joking, “What year was it that we met in the Newsroom [Cafe]? 1922?”
According to Barrymore, she was on her way to a yoga class when The Wedding Singer started playing on her TV, prompting her to postpone her workout so she could sit down and relive the past.
“I love you so much @adamsandler,” she captioned the video. “The Wedding Singer came on my TV as I was getting ready to leave the house and I had to take in this moment and watch it.”
The Wedding Singer marked the first of many Barrymore-Sandler flicks. It follows Robbie, a wedding singer, who falls in love with Julia, a waitress who works at the venue where he performs. The only problem? She’s engaged to a dirtbag who cheats on her.
During a 2022 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Sandler revealed that Barrymore hadn’t heard his character’s iconic song, “Grow Old With You,” until they filmed the scene, with the actress adding that her on-camera expression was her “reaction on film for the first time.”
In the 25 years since the movie hit theaters, Barrymore and Sandler have co-starred as love interests in two more rom-coms: 50 First Dates (2004) and Blended (2014).
While it’s been an entire decade since the two have teamed up for a film, Barrymore revealed during a February 2023 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show that they are “definitely talking about” doing another movie together.
“There’s conversations to find the thing,” she said at the time. “I think it’s very script-story-specific. And yeah, we’re actively seeking the right thing. I’ll just leave it at that.”
