Matt Rife typically has a comeback for everything. But on this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the comedian was left speechless after host Drew Barrymore made a morbid joke about her dead grandparents.
Rife appeared on the talk show to promote his new memoir Your Mom’s Gonna Love Me, which hit stands earlier this month. During his chat with Barrymore, she asked about his grandfather, who is often a subject in his stand-up comedy routines.
“Your grandfather, by the way, did a beautiful job with you. He raised you, right?” Barrymore said. “Your grandfather had a huge, profound effect on your life.”
Barrymore asked what Rife called his late grandfather, to which he replied, “Oh, just Papaw. Everybody has a weird nickname for their grandparents. What did you call yours?”
Without much hesitation, Barrymore immediately answered, “Dead,” completely stunning Rife.
“Oh, my god!” he exclaimed as he keeled over the couch. Taking Barrymore’s hand, he told her, “I’ll be your grandpa. I’ll do that for you. I’ll be your very alive grandpa.”
Barrymore doesn’t open up about her family too often. Still, she said in an October 2023 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show that she had communicated with her late grandfather, whom she had never met, during a meditation session.

The actress sobbed to Long Island Medium star Theresa Caputo as she opened up about her deceased family members.
“I’ve just had such a yearning my whole life for family and all the sudden, when you talked about how somebody could be waiting for them on the other side, then maybe that is when I’ll be with my family,” she said through tears. “Because they died all before I was born and I never pictured them being there, so that was really exciting.”
