Drew Barrymore and Ross Mathews want Chelsea Handler to bring back her late-night talk show Chelsea Lately.

On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the co-hosting duo discussed actor Adam Scott and how he won’t rewatch Parks and Recreation because it makes him too sad. Mathews, who spent years working on Chelsea Lately and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, understood where the actor was coming from.

“When I see old clips from The Tonight Show or Chelsea Lately or something, it’s almost like a little journal. You remember what you were thinking, what your life was like back then,” he said, telling Barrymore that he “totally” texts his former co-workers to get together and reminisce on the old days every once in a while.

Barrymore, who has been working with Mathews since her talk show premiered in 2020, said she wants Chelsea Lately to come back.

“You know what? So do I. I’d love to see it come back. [Handler] hints that she might want to do a Chelsea Later version,” Mathews said, while Barrymore added, “Now I’m mad and nostalgic and want something! I feel you, Adam Scott. Bring back Chelsea Lately.

Mathews appeared as a panelist on Chelsea Lately during its entire run (from 2007 to 2014, to be exact). Before that, Mathews — then known as “Ross the Intern” — made his late-night debut in a 2001 episode of The Tonight Show. He was later promoted to “correspondent” and worked on the show from 2006 to 2013.

Mathews later reunited with Leno in a 2024 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.

“My favorite intern. We had a lot of them, but he was the most annoying. That was the fun part,” Leno joked at the time. “We enjoyed having you. I always liked you because you were kind. I think you started in the mailroom. I don’t mean this in a weird way but you had no discernible talent. I mean, you didn’t sing, you didn’t dance.”

He added, “You just had a funny personality. I thought, ‘Well this kid’s got something.'”

The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays on CBS. You can check the website for local airtimes.
