Can you imagine not liking Drew Barrymore? We can’t! On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress-turned-talk show host revealed that she had a hard time making friends with kids her own age when she was younger because “children did not like” her.

Barrymore opened up about her childhood while interviewing Boy George, who stopped by to promote his return to Broadway in the musical Moulin Rouge!

“Children did not like me when I was a kid,” she said. “They really didn’t. They were like, ‘Who the hell are you? What are you? You look like a kid but you’re not a kid.'”

Boy George then said his eccentric fashion taste often provoked unwarranted comments from children.

“I think being colorful — I used to get things like I’d be at a bus stop dressed, like those beautiful pictures you showed, and some kid would look at me and go, ‘Look, mommy! Look at that funny lady!'” he recalled. “And you’d be like, ‘Oh my god. How do I react?'”

He added, “Kids are very honest. They’re brutal.”

Barrymore agreed with her guest, saying, “They really are. And I felt like I did not fit in with kids and I didn’t really go to school, I was working, you know, I had a job.”

Meanwhile, the “Karma Chameleon” singer pointed out that Barrymore — who starred in her first movie at only seven years old — “had the life” he wanted growing up.

“I had to go to school and I had to do all those things,” he said. “But really what I wanted was to entertain. I didn’t want to go to school.”

He continued, “I was always being told I was a dreamer and I should be more realistic about what I was hoping to achieve. Because I’d go to the job officer and they’d say, ‘What do you want to do?’ And I’d say, ‘I want to be a makeup artist!’ And they’d laugh.”

Earlier this week, Barrymore became emotional as she opened up to the audience about her troublesome childhood.

“I know every time I bring my own life experiences up — I never thought there would be a day in my life where it wasn’t smoking at nine, doing drugs at 11, institutionalized at 13, for years,” she said. “And if people had not given me the chance to transform my life, maybe that would’ve been it.”

The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays on CBS. You can check the website for local airtimes.
