Drew Barrymore and Matthew McConaughey go way back. On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress remembered the “bongo-playing parties” McConaughey would throw when they were filming the 1995 comedy Boys on the Side.
Barrymore made the revelation when McConaughey’s name came up during the daily “Drew’s News” segment.
“I love Matthew McConaughey, by the way,” she said. “We did this film together many years ago called Boys on the Side. And Matthew used to drink tequila and have bongo-playing parties.”
This isn’t the first time Barrymore has dished on McConaughey’s love of bongos. The star initially brought it up when McConaughey video-called into a January 2021 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
“You were, like, playing the bongos. I remember that was happening a lot when you were off work,” she said, to which McConaughey confirmed, “Yes, I played bongos long before I got arrested for playing bongos.”
McConaughey was, of course, referring to the time he was arrested in 1999 while naked, stoned and playing the bongos.
The Wedding Planner star wrote in his memoir Greenlights that he was in his home when he decided to undress, open his windows, smoke a bowl of marijuana, and conduct a “jam session” while listening to “the beautiful African melodic beats of Henri Dikongué play through my home speakers,” per The Independent.

“What I didn’t know was that while I was banging away in my bliss, two Austin policemen also thought it was time to barge into my house unannounced, wrestle me to the ground with nightsticks, handcuff me and pin me to the floor,” he wrote.
Refusing to cloth himself, McConaughey was “body-slammed” by one of the cops “onto the brick footpath” while neighbors began to gather outside to see what was going on.
“Two days later, BONGO NAKED T-shirts were all over Austin,” he added.
McConaughey was ultimately fined $50 for “disturbing the peace.”
