Production is underway for the highly anticipated Hollywood Squares reboot, which star Drew Barrymore teases will be “naughty” and “fun.”

On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore — who will appear as the game show’s center square — revealed that she and her guest, comedian Jay Pharoah, recently filmed an episode of Hollywood Squares.

“I thought it was wild, everything that was going on,” Pharoah said when Barrymore asked for his thoughts on his experience. “But it’s a classic show and I’m glad I got to do it. But when you see it, it’s wild.”

Barrymore, who is co-producing Hollywood Squares with her Flower Films production company, told the audience how she planned to pay homage to the original series, which aired from 1966 to 1980.

“I was like, you know what? I think this show needs to go back to the ‘70s. We need to stop the ‘We’re so scared to say and do anything.’ I just want to have fun,” she said. “It’s all based in comedy. And everything is awake and a double entendre. And it’s a little naughty, it’s a nighttime show. We’re having fun.”

Hollywood Squares is a game show in which two contestants must compete in a game of tic-tac-toe for their chance to win cash and other prizes. On each open-faced cube sits a different celebrity, who must answer the players’ questions.

Barrymore, for her part, will be a series regular as she occupies the iconic center square, which was previously held by Whoopi Goldberg in the 1998 revival of the show. CBS Mornings co-host Nate Burleson will also serve as the show’s host.

Hollywood Squares is set to premiere sometime in January 2025.

The Drew Barrymore Show airs on weekdays on CBS. You can check the website for local airtimes.
