It’s been a tough week for Drew Barrymore. After facing backlash from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) for picking up cameras for The Drew Barrymore Show amid the ongoing strike, the National Book Awards have officially rescinded the actress’ invitation to host their upcoming ceremony.

The National Book Foundation — which first revealed Barrymore as the event’s host in July — announced the update in a post to X, formerly known as Twitter, yesterday (Sept. 12). The ceremony is set to take place on Nov. 15 and a new host has not yet been named.

“The National Book Awards is an evening dedicated to celebrating the power of literature, and the incomparable contributions of writers to our culture,” they wrote. “In light of the announcement that The Drew Barrymore Show will resume production, the National Book Foundation has rescinded Ms. Barrymore’s invitation to host the 74th National Book Awards Ceremony.”

They added, “Our commitment is to ensure that the focus of the Awards remains on celebrating writers and books, and we are grateful to Ms. Barrymore and her team for their understanding in this situation.”

The Drew Barrymore Show began tapings for Season 4 on Monday (Sept. 11) — which resulted in fervent retaliation from the WGA and its supporters, who have branded Barrymore a “scab” for allegedly crossing the picket lines. Two New York City-based audience members even claimed they were “kicked out” of the taping and “verbally assaulted” by the Drew crew for wearing WGA pins into the studio. A spokesperson for the talk show later told Variety that Barrymore was “completely unaware” of the debacle.

“It is our policy to welcome everyone to our show tapings,” the spokesperson said. “Due to heightened security concerns today, we regret that two audience members were not permitted to attend or were not allowed access. Drew was completely unaware of the incident and we are in the process of reaching out to the affected audience members to offer them new tickets.”

Despite the WGA’s claims that Barrymore is going against the strike by resuming production, SAG-AFTRA — the other striking union — released a statement saying that the show is allowed to film.

The Drew Barrymore Show is produced under the Network Television Code which is a separate contract and is not struck,” they said, per Variety. “It is permissible work and Drew’s role as host does not violate the current strike rules.”

Moreover, Barrymore defended her decision to return for Season 4 in an Instagram post where she promised that her show would adhere to the strike’s rules by “not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind.”

“I want to be there to provide what writers do so well, which is a way to bring us together or help us make sense of the human experience,” she continued. “I hope for a resolve for everyone as soon as possible. We have navigated difficult times since we first came on air. And so I take a step forward to start Season 4 once again with an astute humility.”

The Drew Barrymore Show Season 4 premieres on Monday, Sept. 18.
