After a clip from Monday’s (March 13) episode of The Drew Barrymore Show sparked backlash from transphobes on social media, fans of the show quickly rushed to the defense of Drew Barrymore and her guest, Dylan Mulvaney.
During the interview, Mulvaney — a trans TikTok sensation who documented her transition in her 365 Days of Girlhood series — spoke to Barrymore about bringing “joy” and “comedy” to a world where there is “so much hatred directed toward the trans community.”
“The greatest weapon I can contribute is trans joy and comedy and talking about hard subjects and really intricate moments of a transition, and try to let everybody in to see that I’m not a monster,” she said on Monday’s show. “I’m not somebody that is anything but trying to be myself and be happy.”
When the duo talked about finding the strength to “keep being the joy,” Mulvaney — who said it’s important to “surround yourself with good people” — told Barrymore, “It’s interesting because I look at someone like you and I can’t imagine anybody disliking you.”
In response, the talk show host got on her knees and held Mulvaney’s hands as she admitted, “Oh, please. Do you want to know, ironically, who dislikes me the most sometimes? Myself.”
While swarms of haters cruelly blasted America’s sweetheart on Twitter, even more viewers jumped in to stand up for Barrymore and Mulvaney.
“If you’re curious as to why Drew Barrymore is trending – Terfs are super mad at her for the crime of not hating people,” one fan explained. “So they decided to keep tweeting vile things about trans people and congratulating each other for being trash.”
Another added, “I’m reading these comments people are posting and I am in shock. Makes me want to cry actually.”
“Are people really complaining about Drew Barrymore?” someone else asked. “So many people don’t realize life is too short to always have something to complain about.”
Another pointed out, “Sees why Drew Barrymore is trending this morning. Oh just a lot of bigots losing their shit.”
