Drew Barrymore‘s star only continues to rise. The actress, daytime TV host and businesswoman is taking on yet another role as host of the iconic MTV Movie & TV Awards. She was revealed as host in a press release sent out by MTV this morning, which included a clip of Barrymore breaking the news herself on her talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show.
While dressed as campy horror queen M3GAN — a sight Drew fans have seen a few times now — Barrymore tells herself, “You’re hosting the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. How exciting!”
Back at the Drew’s News desk, Barrymore as herself exclaims, “Wow, I am so honored to have been chosen — especially his year, when the show is all about the fans.”
After noting that, like us, she’s also “a fan,” the original Scream (1996) star turns to her old pal Ghostface and asks, “And you’re a fan of scary movies, right?”
But the masked slasher and the creepy AI doll aren’t the only terrifying entities who make an appearance in Barrymore’s exciting announcement! Just days after Elizabeth Banks, who directed the bizarre horror Cocaine Bear, was followed onto the Oscars stage by someone dressed in a bear suit, Barrymore brought out her own version of the wacky moment.
“It is going to be an epic night. Big moments! Huge movie stars! Cocaine Bear, are you free on May 7?” she asks as someone dressed as a bear slides across the floor.
The clip concludes with both Ghostface and Cocaine Bear — now donning a pair of sunglasses — popping back into the screen.
“The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards! We’ll be there,” she says, before turning her head to reveal her blue M3GAN contacts and switching back to her version of the doll’s voice. “Will you?”
Barrymore is no stranger to the award show as she’s been nominated nine times and has taken home three Golden Popcorn statues. She first won the Best Kiss category for The Wedding Singer before going on to win Best On-Screen Team for Charlie’s Angels and 50 First Dates.
She was most recently nominated for Best Talk/Topical Show in 2022. And in 2020, she and her “cinematic soulmate” Adam Sandler were honored as “Dynamic Duo” at the MTV Awards: Greatest of All Time.
The MTV Movie & TV Awards airs on Sunday, May 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Until then, you can The Drew Barrymore Show when it airs on weekdays on CBS. You can check the website for local airtimes.
