Drew Barrymore just added some new art to her body. For the second time in her show’s history, the actress-turned-talk show host got tattooed live on The Drew Barrymore Show alongside Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden.
This morning’s episode of Barrymore’s self-titled daytime talk show opened with the star getting tattooed by Ink Master star Jon Mesa, who has done work on a slew of celebrities, from Pete Davidson to Miley Cyrus.
“Yeah, I’m in the middle of getting a tattoo and I’d like to bring someone out here who is a very awesome person,” Barrymore said. “You know him from life and just a little band called Good Charlotte and he’s actually hosting the most current season of Ink Master on Paramount+. Let me just say he is inked up to the nines but he’s about to add one more to that very illustrious canvas. It is my friend Joel Madden, everybody.”
When the singer came out onto the stage, he couldn’t help but notice Barrymore’s flinch-free reaction to getting tattooed.
“I’m impressed because I’ve been watching and you haven’t made a face,” Madden said, to which Barrymore replied, “Jon is very gentle. I mean, this really is the most painless tattoo I’ve ever got. It’s true. This is the softest one I’ve ever gotten. I didn’t know that that was an option.”

Just underneath the tattoos of her daughters’ names and a “home is where we are” quote — which was also done on-air by Ink Master star Ryan Ashley back in 2021 — Barrymore decided to get the words, “I am human,” permanently etched onto her forearm. Meanwhile, Madden — who is married to Barrymore’s longtime friend Nicole Richie — opted to tattoo the names of their two dogs on his hand.
“I love ‘I Am Human,'” Madden said. “We all talk bad to ourselves. We’re the meanest to ourselves. If someone talked to us like we talk to ourselves, we’d kick them out of the room. But we talk to ourselves that way.”
Barrymore is certainly no stranger to tattoos. During a Season 3 interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress recalled getting her first piece of ink at only 13 years old.
“It’s so funny because I’m so torn. Like, now I’m 48 and a mom of two girls and it all comes full circle. [They ask], ‘When did you get your first tattoo?’ I’m like, … 13….'” she said, before later joking, “I love illegal tattooing!”
