Henry Winkler was forced to take over this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show after host Drew Barrymore ran off the stage while choking.
After Barrymore introduced the Happy Days star to the audience, he remembered meeting her as a child while filming Ron Howard’s 1982 comedy Night Shift with her mom. But before Barrymore could ask her next question, she began coughing.
“Don’t you worry. Don’t you worry. It’s OK,” Winkler told the actress, who proceeded to run away. “No? OK.”
Once he realized that Barrymore had completely left the stage, he turned to the audience and said, “So, thank you for being here. It is such a pleasure. So, while we’re waiting, is there anything you’d like to hear about?”
When one audience member yelled, “Arrested Development,” Winkler explained how he became a regular on the long-running sitcom.
“I went as the lawyer for the family and it was really hard for me to read so I would ad-lib a lot,” Winkler, who has dyslexia, said. “I was there in my first scene in the living room with the rest of the family and I have a bunch of Danish on the table. And I open my attache case and while I’m talking to them, I’m pulling the Danish closer and closer.”
Eventually, Winkler “let the Danish fall into [his] attache case.”
“And I stayed for five years,” he said, before adding, “That was really written by a genius.”

Just as he wrapped his story, Barrymore finally made her way back out to continue their interview.
“That has never happened to me in my life. Excuse me so much. I’m so sorry,” she said, to which Winkler replied, “No! Are you a human being?”
Feeling validated, Barrymore nodded before moving on to the next segment in their chat.
