Draymond Green certainly doesn’t think highly of Knicks fans.
He can also sympathize with what Trae Young has experienced from their wrath.
The polarizing and outspoken Warriors forward scolded the Knicks’ fan base while speaking with Young at the Uninterrupted Film Festival, pointing to their treatment of the Hawks star during their first-round playoff exit in 2021.
“New York Knicks fans are f–king delusional and miserable,” Green said. “They’re a hard fan base.
“Trae, you go into the Garden, hitting the shots, bowing, you are very much a showman, yet that’s been flipped into being a villain. I’ll be the first to say it: being a villain (stinks), it’s no fun.”
During that playoff series, which marked the Knicks’ first postseason appearance since 2013, Young shined as he led the Hawks past the Knicks in five games, averaging 29.2 points and 9.8 assists in the series.
It was the manner in which he did it, though, that drew the ire of Knicks fans.
Known for his theatrics and showmanship, Young constantly antagonized the Madison Square Garden crowd throughout the series, which was raucous as the team broke its playoff drought.
“F–k Trae Young” chants constantly reverberated around the arena, to which Young often met with shushing gestures or the opposite, egging them on for more.
Young has long seemed to enjoy the villain role with his actions, but when asked by Green if he embraces it, Young shared a different sentiment.
“Like you said, this s–t ain’t really fun, being a villain” Young answered. “I really just feed off of the crowd. I really don’t like being that way, but it’s been that way since high school, when I was averaging 40 [points per game] my senior year in high school…
“That’s kind of what it was. I was going to other arenas. They were chanting ‘overrated,’ it’s just what it is. But I’m not like that type of person. I’d rather just go out there, put on a show, have fun, smile and get the win.”
