Can various righties please quit raging about how Zohran Mamdani is a closet Islamist?
There’s no shortage of real reasons to oppose his campaign for mayor: His resume is tissue-thin, he plays footsy with rabid Jew-haters, and his economic plans would destroy our city’s prosperity.
But that’s because he subscribes to an elitist, campus-cultured socialism — not because he’s a Muslim, let alone of the extreme fundamentalist variety.
Islamists seek to create a global caliphate and convert the world by the sword. Mamdani shows no sign of interest in anything like that.
At most, he’s about radical anticolonial politics: His dad is a leading scholar and advocate of that movement.
This brand of anti-Western politics is found throughout the Third World; cool-kid lefties on Western campuses have been eating it up for decades now.
And central casting couldn’t produce a better-looking candidate to win the cheers of that Millennial hipster crowd than Zohran Mamdani.
Even his script is tailored to these frustrated college grads, so convinced that their high rents ally them with the wretched of the earth.
(Never mind that all his shallow socialist promises only work while he’s seeking office — winning is everything for his team now.)

Yes, Mamdani’s family, heritage and identity are Muslim — like 800,000 other New Yorkers’. But it’s not what makes him toxic.
Harping on his faith is worse than a distraction — it bolsters his campaign by letting him cry “Islamophobia” and play the victim.
Keep the focus on what he clearly is, and why he means disaster for the city.
