NextImg:Donald Trump’s missed opportunity: Letters to the Editor — Sep. 13, 2024

Former President Donald Trump appeared sullen and enraged as he lied and promoted nutty conspiracy theories during the debate with Vice President Kamala Harris Tuesday night (“Beats Trump — but no bump,” Sept. 12).

My favorite attempt of Trump’s to hoodwink the America people was his assertion, said with a straight face, that everyone — Republicans, Democrats and independents — wanted the Roe v. Wade decision overturned and the issue of abortion rights delegated to the states.

Tell that to voters who have served to enshrine abortion rights in both blue and red states when given the opportunity to vote on the issue.

Trump has boasted of appointing three Supreme Court justices who would do his bidding: to end a national right to an abortion. He now finds that he should have been careful what he wished for.

During the debate, neither candidate exactly won a gold star for providing direct answers to the questions. The most blatant case of avoidance was during the debate’s opening, when the VP was asked whether Americans are better off today than they were four years ago.

Harris’ equivocation was transparent, yet the pundits are saying she’s the winner. Let’s not forget that, eight years ago, former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton was said to have “won” her debates, too.

The debate proved Trump has lost his fastball and is a terrible candidate.

His evasion of the questions on several topics was comical.

When questioned why he pressured GOP members to squash a House bill that would fund border security, he rambled about migrants eating cats and dogs in Ohio. When asked about his role in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, he maintained he had told the crowd to march peacefully.

And boy, did he get steamed at the thought of people leaving his rallies due to boredom.

Trump blew it at the debate. All he had to do was look into the camera and ask the millions of viewers the following question: “Are you better off today than when I was president?”

Since the answer is obviously, “no” he could have won, but he let Harris get the better of him.

If President Biden or even Harris had praised the “late, great Hannibal Lecter,” ranted about immigrants eating cats and dogs or made any of the unsubstantiated claims heard from the former president during the debate, then Republicans would be screaming about their mental capacity.

Where are these same members of the GOP when their nearly 80-year-old leader continues to demonstrate his increasing detachment from reality?

Don’t blame the moderators. The former president failed to challenge Harris where she is vulnerable: the economy and the border. Trump blew it.

I learned so much during the debate. Apparently, some blue states execute newborn babies and immigrants eat cats and dogs on the streets of Springfield, Ohio. (None of that is true, of course, despite what Trump claims).

After the debate, Trump saw a potential audience and ambled into the spin room where he declared it was his best debate ever.

Dementia is no laughing matter, but somehow Trump always manages to make his hilarious.
