TORONTO – Domingo German escaped a sticky-substance ejection last month, but not on Tuesday night.
Before German took the mound for the bottom of the fourth inning at Rogers Centre, he was intercepted by umpires who spent a while feeling his right hand and glove.
After all four umpires eventually took their turn patting down German’s hand for sticky stuff, they convened for a meeting to discuss their findings.
The result was German getting ejected from a game in which he had retired all nine batters he faced on 37 pitches.
All sticky-substance ejections also come with an automatic 10-game suspension, which will hurt the Yankees moving forward because they cannot replace German on the roster.
It was the same umpiring crew – led by crew chief James Hoye – on Tuesday as the one that took issue with German’s sticky hand on April 15 at Yankee Stadium.
In that case – despite umps asking German to remove rosin after the top of the third inning and still having some on his pinky finger to start the fourth – German was allowed to stay in the game.
The umps did not give German the same mercy on Tuesday, as Ian Hamilton was forced to come on from the bullpen to replace him in a game the Yankees led 2-0.
German’s ejection also came less than a month after Mets ace Max Scherzer was ejected from a game against the Dodgers for having excessive stickiness on his hand, which he claimed was sweat and rosin.
