The Miami Dolphins are looking like the best team in the NFL through three weeks.
Their home opener at Hard Rock Stadium welcomed in Sean Payton, Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos, and they put 70 points in them, becoming only the fourth team in NFL history to do so.
“Seventy points is crazy,” said Devon, who combined with veteran running back Raheem Mostert for eight touchdowns. “That’s like video game-type stuff.”
The Dolphins won 70-20, joining only the 1940 Chicago Bears, who have the NFL record 73 points, the 1966 Washington team who scored 72, and the 1950 Los Angeles Rams, whom the Dolphins tied for third place in NFL history.
“It felt like chasing points and chasing a record — that’s not what we came to the game to do,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said after the game.
The Dolphins join the San Francisco 49ers as the only NFL teams at 3-0, a list either the Philadelphia Eagles or Tampa Bay Buccaneers can join with Week 3 victories.
(The Eagles and Bucs play each other on Monday night.)
Under McDaniel’s high-powered offense, the Dolphins have scored a league-best 130 points through three weeks.
“To be able to put up 70 points, I think that is going to put a lot of teams on notice that we’re nothing to play with,” Mostert said. “We’re that team, just to put it bluntly.”
Against the Broncos, the Dolphins put forth a collection of high-level individual performances.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa completed 23 for 26 of his passes, accumulating 309 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions.
Achane, selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, broke out for 233 all-purpose yards on 22 touches and four total touchdowns, including 203 rushing yards.
Raheem Mostert added 142 yards from scrimmage and 20 touches, while also scoring four touchdowns.
Wide receiver Tyreek Hill hauled in nine passes for 157 yards and a touchdown.
Even a collection of former Jets, Mike White and Robbie Chosen (Anderson), connected for a 68-yard touchdown pass in garbage time.
White is Tagovailoa’s backup quarterback while Chosen was signed from the Dolphins practice prior to the game.
