A Georgia family was reunited with its lost dog three years after the beloved elder pooch went missing.

Binky, who is 18 years old, was brought to Dorchester Paws, an animal shelter in Summerville, South Carolina, as a stray last month, according to WCSC.

The pup was malnourished, its matted fur was infested in fleas, its nails were overgrown and its teeth were rotting.

The lost canine was brought to an animal shelter and scanned for a microchip.

But hope came when Binky was scanned for a microchip, and the staff there was able to locate its family, who live six hours away in Georgia.

A volunteer from the shelter drove Binky back home for a joyful — and tearful — reunion.

“Binky’s story is not only heart-wrenching, but a story of the importance of microchips and doing the right thing,” Lanea Wilson, manager of Dorchester Paws Pet Support Department, told the outlet.

“If you find a lost pet, please go to the nearest vet office or animal shelter to get them scanned for a microchip, someone could be missing that pet, whether only a few hours or years, they may have a family desperately looking for them somewhere.”
