Just a month after signing with the Dodgers, Roki Sasaki is tying the knot.
The 23-year-old announced through a post on his Instagram account on Friday that he recently got married.
“The other day, I registered my marriage with an ordinary woman,” Sasaki posted on Instagram. “I’m full of expectations and anxiety as it’s a new start for both my work and private life. We will work hard as a couple, so please keep a warm eye on us.
“There is a lot that I can’t do on my own, and this environment where I can focus on baseball is created by all the people around me,” he continued. “I’m happy to have someone with me who is very important to me.”
Sasaki did not name his wife in the announcement, nor reveal any details regarding when and where the two joined in marriage.
He did, however, reveal that his wife is not a celebrity.
Sasaki’s surprise wedding announcement comes nearly a year after teammate Shohei Ohtani did the same thing.
Similar to Sasaki, Ohtani also kept his relationship private upon the announcement, but he has since revealed the identity of his wife, former Japanese professional basketball player Mamiko Tanaka.
The 23-year-old Sasaki’s relationship status was reportedly not known throughout the Dodgers’ clubhouse, with manager Dave Roberts being shocked by the news.
“What?” Roberts told the Associated Press. “I didn’t even know he had a girlfriend. The wedding gift will be on the way. Congratulations.”
Roberts also said that Sasaki’s first spring training appearance will be soon, but did not specify a date.
“He’ll be pitching sometime in the middle of [next] week,” Roberts told MLB.com.
Sasaki signed with the Dodgers on Jan. 17 following a monthslong sweepstakes in which he heard bids from over 20 MLB clubs, including the Mets and Yankees.
Sasaki ultimately chose the Dodgers over the Padres and Blue Jays, who were also in his final three.
Prior to Sasaki’s switch to MLB, the righty spent four seasons playing for the Chiba Lotte Marines of Japan’s Pacific League, posting a 2.02 ERA.
