Man! I feel like a “Glamma.”

ABC’s newest Ryan Murphy-produced series, Doctor Odyssey, aired its second episode on Thursday night and welcomed a new crop of passengers aboard for a”Singles Week” cruise. Among the guests to embark this episode were Kim Kardashian’s former assistant Stephanie Suganami, Glee alum Chord Overstreet — whose character hooked up with just about everyone on the ship, spreading a nasty case of syphilis in the process — and none other than Shania Twain as a glamorous grandmother… hence the aforementioned nickname.

Twain, who appeared as herself in Netflix’s A Man in Full with Jeff Daniels earlier this year, arrives on the boat alongside her granddaughter and quickly catches the eye of Captain Robert Massey (Don Johnson). The two go for a spin on the dance floor during the welcome night festivities and — clearly, his dance moves did impress her much — they meet up again for a romantic sunset dinner. Bad news for anyone thinking a happy ending is in store, however, as things quickly go south when Massey keels over during dinner. A Twain-wreck, if you will.

While all signs point to the ship captain having experienced a heart attack, Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) later reveals that Massey really is dealing with a case of stress cardiomyopathy, a.k.a. broken heart syndrome. Like Twain’s character, Massey also lost his partner and is only beginning to open back up to the idea of love again.

Sadly, the “Any Man of Mine” singer does not get the opportunity to show off her vocal chords as she did in A Man in Full, but the episode does end with her character embracing Johnson’s and slyly smiling in a way that makes us think she could be back for more.

Outside of the Twain of it all, the show continues to double down on the ludicrousness of a steamy procedural set on a cruise ship. The episode began with three women very publicly brawling in a pool over a character referred to only as “Jeffrey with ‘That D'” and ended with two migrants who were separated at sea being reunited — tonally, it was a bit all over the place.

The highlight of the episode had to be Overstreet’s character having numerous TV-PG threesomes (is there such a thing?!) and the medical crew on board the Odyssey then having to treat a roster of cruise ship guests with penicillin. You will never be able to accuse a Ryan Murphy show of not being a little bit bonkers, that’s for sure.

All in all, Doctor Odyssey seems to be struggling a bit to find its footing as a series, squandering its incredible cast members in the meantime. The hope here is that by the mid-season, we will see a cohesive narrative come together but for right now, it seems as though that concept is — as Bobby Darin’s hit song would say — “Beyond the Sea.”

Doctor Odyssey‘s first two episodes are available to stream now on Hulu. New episodes air Thursday nights on ABC.
