Doctor Odyssey could be preparing for its final sailing.
According to a new report from Deadline, the freshman ABC dramedy starring Joshua Jackson, Don Johnson, Phillipa Soo, and Sean Teale is on the edge between a second season renewal and cancellation. With that in mind, one source said that the upcoming Season 1 finale “could serve as a series finale” if ABC decides to forego another embarkation. The series follows the medical team and crew aboard a luxury cruise ship as they attend to passengers with ailments ranging from noses that have fallen off to rubber duckies stuck in the stomach.
The teetering comes, in part, from the show’s production value and unpromising viewership numbers in recent weeks. While the show premiered in the fall to 16.5 million views across platforms for the first 30 days of streaming, it has since dipped, only experiencing a bump from the Episode 11 crossover with 9-1-1, featuring Angela Bassett‘s Athena Grant.
While not the most popular show ABC premiered in the fall — that accolade goes to High Potential starring Kaitlin Olson, which has already been renewed for Season 2 — Doctor Odyssey has amassed a bit of a cult following for its whacky premises, impressive guest stars, and outlandish acting choices. The series follows the medical team and crew aboard a luxury cruise ship as they attend to passengers with ailments ranging from noses that have fallen off to rubber duckies stuck in the stomach.
Should Season 1 really be the end of the TV show, fans will all but surely be left on cliffhangers when it comes to not one but two pregnancies for Odyssey dwellers.
In the most recent episode, Shania Twain’s character returned and announced that she is pregnant after her hookup with Captain Robert (Johnson) back in Episode 2. This unexpected baby bump in the road comes after Avery (Soo) finds out she too is expecting following her threesome with Dr. Max (Jackson) and Tristan (Teale) earlier in the season. Only recently did she decide to keep the pregnancy, however, without any commitment to either of the potential fathers. Who knows where this goes!
The first 12 episodes of Doctor Odyssey Season 1 are currently streaming on Hulu. New episodes air Thursdays at 9 PM local on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu.
