Doctor Odyssey is putting the fin in finally.
Three months after leaving us in suspense on a baby cliffhanger for Dr. Max (Joshua Jackson), Avery (Philippa Soo), and Tristan (Sean Teale), the oddball ABC medical procedural is back and filled with bite… literally.
In Episode 9 (“Shark Attack”), The Odyssey’s crew is faced with personal and professional predicaments as one of their own, Spence (Marcus Emmanuel Mitchell), encounters life-threatening injuries from a shark bite endured while surfing. As if things weren’t dramatic enough, the attack occurred as Avery and Max were sparring on land over who the father of her baby is and how to handle Avery’s unexpected pregnancy. Kids, don’t have threesomes with your coworkers; it cannot and will not end well.
With Spence in danger of losing his foot after taking a nasty bite to the ankle, The Odyssey and Captain Robert (Don Johnson) chart a course for the nearest hospital, only to be interrupted by more shark-infested waters. This time, it’s a distress call from a sunken vessel with two critically ill passengers, including a surf enthusiast named Josie, played by Rumer Willis! Max and Tristan head out in a rescue boat to pull the endangered sailors out of the water, and not a moment too soon. As Max works with the medic from the sunken ship, Dr. Brooke Lane (Adrianne Palicki), to pull her passengers to safety, sharks circle and even knock into the boat, pushing Max and Brook into each other sweetly. Or as sweetly as a potentially deadly shark attack can be.

Thankfully, Tristan, Max, and the rest of the group are able to make it back to The Odyssey and out of the jaws of, well, jaws. Their arrival back on the luxury vessel could not come any sooner as Josie and her boyfriend are in desperate need of medical intervention. Aboard the ship, Spence is also looking worse for wear and fighting off a possible case of sepsis, caused by an infection at the wound site. Understaffed and underequipped to handle two potential cases of amputation, the ship plans course for the nearest hospital. But remember, this is The Odyssey, things always have to get 100 times worse before they get better.
Before making it to land, a great white shark swims directly into The Odyssey’s propellor, killing the ship’s forward motion and leaving them “dead in the water,” as Captain Robert says. As if things couldn’t take a more twisted turn, the deck realizes that the great white shark swam into the propeller while trying to evade a pod of orcas, which now surrounds the ship. This all occurs amongst the backdrop of subtle but recognizable looks between Brooke and Max that leave Avery looking a little green with envy. Could this be the drama that solidifies her decision to end the pregnancy?

In true Doctor Odyssey fashion, the episode ends with the power going out mid-surgery because of issues with the main breaker, leaving the entire crew stranded and potentially aboard a metaphorical and literal sinking ship. Oh, and did I mention that all three of the shark attack victims are in critically ill condition in the final seconds? This is surely going to end well!
Will Max, Avery, and Tristan survive the blackout? Will the orcas attack The Odyssey and leave the ship in a dire state? And will Max and Brooke act on the serious flirtation that was happening throughout the episode? These questions will all have to be answered when the second installment of this two-part episode, “Shark Attack! Part 2: Orca,” airs on March 13.
The first nine episodes of Doctor Odyssey Season 1 are currently streaming on Hulu. New episodes air Thursdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
