Still shocked by that Doctor Odyssey midseason cliffhanger? So is the cast.
**Spoilers ahead for the first eight episodes of Doctor Odyssey**
More than three months have passed since the last episode of the freshman ABC dramedy aired and stars Joshua Jackson, Sean Teale, and Don Johnson say they are right with the fans in shaking their heads at the reveal. In advance of the midseason premiere on March 6, the trio of actors sat down with Decider to talk about the news of Avery’s (Philippa Soo) pregnancy and what happens next for The Odyssey’s medical crew. Remember, it was a threesome between Avery, Max, and Tristan in Episode 6, “I Always Cry At Weddings,” that put our favorite ship-dwellers in this predicament and staring down some difficult choices. So how will things shake out when the show returns with Episode 9, “Shark Attack,” this week?
“New phone, who this?” joked Jackson, clearly trying to avoid sharing spoilers about the second half of Season 1. The Dawson’s Creek alum added of the next block of episodes that, in a very Doctor Odyssey fashion, “Everything goes to 11.”
In the world of the Ryan Murphy-produced series, that could mean so many things. Will Avery continue with the pregnancy? Will she exercise her right to choose? Will the three of them decide to have the baby, live out their days as a throuple, and then eventually even bring Captain Robert into the relationship? Anything is on the table with this show, it seems.

While they may be used to it by now, the actors shared with Decider that when they first received the scripts for Episode 8, “Quackers,” they were still in their early days of working on a show that goes balls to the wall. Teale, especially, said that after watching his character pine for Soo’s for six episodes before their ménage à trois, he should have predicted there would be a catch to the whole situation.
“I was as shocked as Tristan was,” he explained. “I should have known is what I said. I was shocked by it and then went, ‘Oh my gosh, I should have known this was going to happen because anything is possible in this world.'”
In November, Decider also spoke with Soo, who echoed her co-stars’ sentiment regarding their surprise. She said she was similarly taken aback by the news, but that in the world of The Odyssey, one should always expect (pun intended) the unexpected.

Based on an episode description for Episode 9, which teases Avery and Max “at a crossroads” over the pregnancy, we know that this trio will still be dealing with the fallout in the coming episodes. Fans will remember that Avery was only recently accepted to medical school and must now grapple with how a pregnancy could alter her career and life goals.
Don’t expect the pregnancy to be the only source of drama for these characters, though. Jackson shared that when it comes to Avery, Max, and Tristan, there is still plenty of yearning that will be explored in Episode 9 of Doctor Odyssey and beyond.
“I think the thing that we set up at the cliffhanger of the season, of where this relationship dynamic — this trio, this throuple — goes, that to me is the meat of the second half [of Season 1] for us,” Jackson said. We’ll just have to wait and see how it plays out.
Doctor Odyssey returns on ABC Thursday, March 6 at 9 p.m. New episodes debut the next day on Hulu.
