Is that the sound of a police siren or a ship’s horn blaring? Turns out that it’s both because Doctor Odyssey is crossing over with 9-1-1 in an upcoming episode!
That’s right, the two ABC shows — which both air on Thursday nights and are produced by Ryan Murphy — will feature a special crossover of characters when Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) boards The Odyssey to help out Dr. Max (Joshua Jackson), Tristan (Sean Teale), Avery (Phillipa Soo), and Captain Robert (Don Johnson). The episode, titled “Casino Week,” airs on March 20, just two weeks after the dramedies return from their months-long midseason hiatus.
“It’s Casino Week aboard The Odyssey, and unexpected guest Athena Grant suspects two passengers are targeting the ship’s vault,” the logline for Episode 11 of Doctor Odyssey reveals. “Enlisting Max’s help, Athena raises the stakes in a dangerous game where not everyone will end up with a winning hand.”
The “unexpected guest” part of the description could be referring to Athena’s recent troubles on cruise ships, which fans of 9-1-1 know about all too well. At the start of Season 7, Athena and Bobby (Peter Krause) finally get around to taking their honeymoon, only to end up on a ship that flips over and capsizes over the course of three dramatic episodes. Could Athena be challenging herself to overcome her fear by stepping on The Odyssey? We’ll see soon.
Sadly, ABC did not release any photos of Bassett alongside the Doctor Odyssey castmembers when announcing the crossover, but the network has finally given fans a look at Episode 9, “Shark Attack,” which will air on March 6 and feature — you guessed it — a shark attack. In that two-part special, The Odyssey’s crew will have to work fast to rescue Spencer Monroe (Marcus Emanuel Mitchell) after he becomes a snack for a hungry shark during an afternoon of surfing.
ABC is all about the crossovers at the moment considering that in January, Abbott Elementary did a special episode with the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia crew that saw the ensemble comedies coming together for some mismatched fun. A Sunny-fied version of events will air when the long-running series returns in the summer for its 17th season. It’s Always Sunny technically airs on FX but streams on Hulu and is under the Disney-owned TV shows umbrella.
Last year, 9-1-1 also collaborated on a crossover with The Bachelor, bringing the firefighters of the 118 to Bachelor mansion to perform a rescue on a woman vying for Joey Graziadei’s heart. It’s also worth mentioning that when Decider spoke with Only Murders in the Building creator John Hoffman, he said he would love to do a crossover with Abbott Elementary in the future, no matter what that might look like. Considering that so many other shows on ABC, Hulu, and FX have gotten the opportunity, why shouldn’t the Abbott crew head to the Big Apple? Until they make that happen, we’ll just be over here expressing gratitude for Doctor Odyssey and 9-1-1.
