NextImg:DK Metcalf levels Rams cornerback with cheap shot at end of loss

DK Metcalf lost his cool.

And his wallet could be taking a hit.

The Seahawks’ star receiver leveled Rams cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon with a cheap shot in the waning minutes of Seattle’s 30-13 home loss Sunday.

Seattle trailed 27-13 with 4:51 remaining when Witherspoon defended Metcalf before trotting to the other side of the field and toward the action.

Metcalf then ran toward Witherspoon’s side before catching him in his side – and potentially in his back – and shoving the Rams’ cornerback to the ground.

Trainers attended to Witherspoon before he left the field.

Metcalf received a 15-yard taunting penalty for his hit, and it’s possible he will receive a fine from the league this week for the cheap shot.

“I was blocking. I guess I blocked him a little too hard and pushed him to the ground,” Metcalf said. “He got up mad ‘cause he felt I blocked him in the back. That’s just how I play. I block every play, even when I don’t have the ball and never taking a play off or jogging and trying to take a play off.

“That’s what transpired.”

While it’s certainly an admirable character trait to never take a play off, there’s a fine line between playing hard and hitting a player who wasn’t paying attention because he’s not near the action.

And Metcalf’s hit is more in line with a cheap shot than giving max effort on each snap.

The 25-year-old said his taunting penalty stemmed from his chirping with the opposing players and coaches, who were justifiably upset.

“I seen their coaches yelling at me or saying something to me and their players, and I let that get to me,” Metcalf said. “I retaliated, and the second man always gets caught.

“I got to be better in that aspect.”

Metcalf and the Seahawks certainly had reason to be frustrated after being blown out by an under-manned Rams team following last season’s playoff campaign.

Rams quarterback Matt Stafford threw for 334 yards, despite wideout Cooper Kupp being sidelined, and Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith only tallied 112 passing yards.

Metcalf had 47 of those yards on three catches while scoring a touchdown.

Seattle faces a tall task to get back on track in Week 2 on the road against the Lions and is a 5-point underdog.

“I felt like the Rams played harder than us,” Metcalf said. “Their defense played harder than our offense, and at the end of the day reaped the benefits of it.”
