President Biden’s disapproval rating is the highest it’s ever been as the 80-year-old incumbent president vies for a second term in office, according to a new poll.
A record 58% of Americans do not approve of Biden’s performance in the White House, a CNBC survey released Wednesday found.
The president received particularly low marks for his handling of the economy – 32% approve – and foreign policy – 31% approve.
Among Democrats surveyed, 66% back his handling of foreign policy, and 74% approve of his work on the economy. Those results were well below his 81% overall approval rating from members of his own party.
“You don’t get sub-40 approval ratings without losing large chunks of your base. And that’s what’s happening here,” Republican pollster Micah Roberts told CNBC.
The pollster called the results “distressing numbers for a president facing reelection.”
Biden’s numbers among young voters, blacks and Latinos “are very troubling,” Democratic pollster Jay Campbell told the outlet.
“You start to think that maybe they’ve run out of patience, and it’s starting to show through in their decreasing regard for the president,” Campbell said.
In a potential head-to-head matchup against former President Donald Trump, Biden would lose by 4 points, the poll found. The results showed 46% supporting the 77-year-old former president compared to 42% who would back the incumbent.
The poll, conducted in the wake of Israel’s declaration of war against Hamas terrorists, between Oct. 11 and Oct. 15., found that the vast majority of Americans – 74% – agree that the US government should support military aid for Israel.
A majority – 39% – also said that US policy should favor the Israelis, compared to 6% who said it should favor the Palestinians and 36% who said the US policy should treat both groups the same.
A Quinnipiac poll released Tuesday found that only 42% agree with Biden’s response to the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel. The same number that approve of US policy toward Israel, according to the poll.
Quinnipiac found Biden to have a 56% disapproval rating among registered voters.
Biden announced $100 million in humanitarian aid for the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip during his Wednesday visit to Israel and said that he plans to ask Congress for an “unprecedented” military aid package for the Jewish state.
