The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters director, Seth Gordon, promises that a sequel to his cult-hit documentary is “coming out very soon.” And it already has a title: Arcades & Love Songs: The Ballad Of Walter Day.
Eighteen years ago, Gordon launched his Hollywood career with his 2007 indie documentary about a man named Steve Wiebe, who attempts to beat the world-record high score on the arcade game Donkey Kong, which, at the time, was held by Billy Mitchell. A compelling narrative emerged. Wiebe was the honorable, every-man hero, while Mitchell was the unprincipled, roguish villain. The competition is judged by the genial Walter Day, the founder of an Iowa-based video game database company called Twin Galaxies, which embarks to be the definitive resource of official arcade game high scores, and hosts regular tournaments.
In a recent interview with Decider for his new Netflix film Back in Action, Gordon said that he “just did” a sequel documentary that will focus on Day. In the original documentary, Day is dubbed “the world’s video game referee,” and even wears an official referee jersey during tournaments. But at one point, Day told the camera that what he really wanted to do with his life was become a musician. After the release of The King of Kong, a few fans of the movie met Day at a video game convention, and offered to pay for him to write and record his rock opera album.

“We catch up with all those guys—and with Walter Day, and the album he made, that was sponsored by fans of Kong.” Gordon told Decider. He added that both Mitchell and Wiebe will be featured in the documentary as well, but that “it’s really a lot about Walter as the guy who propped everybody up. He’s getting his chance now.”
Gordon, who did not direct the sequel, but is a producer on the film, declined to share a release date, instead stating that the film was getting “an unusual release strategy,” and assured that “it’s going to be coming out very soon.” However, Collider reported that the Arcades & Love Songs: The Ballad Of Walter Day release date is February 14, 2025. Decider followed up with Gordon to confirm this release date, but did not hear back before the time of this article’s publication.
Arcades & Love Songs: The Ballad Of Walter Day was directed by Ed Cunningham (known for his football documentary Undefeated), and is produced by Gordon, Cunningham, and Jon Perkins, and EP’d by Scott Jackson, Kerry & Cathy Loveland, Paul Campoamor, and Harrison Kordestani.
