Director David Ayer may finally get what he deserves in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

As the man behind the 2016 Suicide Squad, which received a dismal score of 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, Ayer has since been very vocal about his original work being “ripped to pieces,” per Deadline. According to ScreenRant, he argued that the final cut reportedly looks nothing like his original script.

However, Ayer recently took to X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) on Monday (Aug. 7) to share that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn told him his version of the film “would have its time to be shared.”

In response to the news, one critic tweeted, “Not to call out David by saying this, but you do know this was released back in 2016, right?”

Ayer retweeted the critic, asking them, “What’s your advice on how to navigate this situation with grace?”

“There’s a genuine curiosity and interest from a lot of people,” he continued. “And I’m aware of there is another group of people that have fun mocking the film,” deeming the critic’s comment as a “perfect example of how many are magnetically drawn [to] discussion [of] the 2016 film in a negative way.”

“Have you ever had an experience in life that didn’t until the way you wanted, that dragged you, that made you rethink everything?” he asked, immediately replying to himself by penning, “I have.”

“All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release,” he added, explaining that “the interest in [his] cut being show[n] seems real and organic.”

“And Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared,” he shared. “He absolutely deserves to launch to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects.”

Gunn, who directed the 2021 sequel The Suicide Squad, officially began his position as DC co-CEO and co-chair alongside Peter Safran last November.

After hearing about the way fans convinced Warner Bros. to release Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which hit Max in 2021, Ayer urged his fans to do the same with his cut of Suicide Squad, per Variety.

Suicide Squad is streaming on Max.
