It’s not Thanksgiving, it’s DiGiorno.
The frozen pizza giant, known for daring commercials that imagine their prefab pies could be mistaken for one freshly-made and delivered, has come out swinging with an even more brazen pitch this holiday season — Thanksgiving on a pizza.
The rectangular, thick-crust pie is topped with all the Turkey Day favorites — turkey, cranberry, green beans, sweet potato, fried onions and gravy concentrate (yum!), plus a sprinkling of cheddar and mozzarella cheeses.
“From Friendsgiving parties to Turkey Day tables, we’re thrilled to provide a bold new way to appreciate the traditional Thanksgiving spread,” Kimberly Holowiak, the company’s senior brand manager, told Food and Wine in a statement.
“Our passion is pizza, and we are always looking for unique ways to infuse the fresh-baked taste of DiGiorno into moments of celebration — even the most traditional holiday dinners.”
Today with Hoda & Jenna co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager were among the first to take the bait, taste-testing the shocking seasonal concoction on the air.
While Hager had her reservations — “I’m not sure that Thanksgiving and pizza need to come together,” she said — she was relieved the holiday’s hallmark stuffing was left out of the equation.
“It tastes like Thanksgiving on a pizza,” the duo declared after taking a bite into the Detroit-style crust, admitting they “don’t mind it.”
According to The Takeout, where a critic deemed the end result a “bread-based casserole” lacking in sauce and cheese, DiGiorno is releasing the limited-edition pizzas every Wednesday of the month up until Thanksgiving, and has already sold out for the Nov. 1 debut.
The savory pie rings in at precisely $11.23, the date of this year’s Turkey Day, and DiGiorno is limiting sales to one pizza per customer.
DiGiorno is the latest food company to get in the festive spirit — Baskin-Robbins just announced a Thanksgiving-inspired ice cream flavor, Turkey Day Fixin’s.
Launched on Nov. 1, the creamy dessert offers flavors of traditional side dishes: cranberries, sweet potato and honey cornbread, all paired with autumnal spices.
“We continue to push the boundaries of flavor innovation at Baskin-Robbins and wanted to bring a unique scoop to the table that deliciously encapsulates all the sweet and savory flavors from your favorite Thanksgiving sides,” company’s director of brand marketing, Hannah Suits, said in a statement.
“Along with the return of our iconic Turkey Cake, these offerings are a delicious and innovative take on holiday favorites.”
