BOISE, Idaho — A detective provided an Idaho jury with graphic detail Tuesday about how police excavated the rotting bodies of doomsday mom Lori Vallow Daybell’s children.
Rexburg Police Department Det. Ray Hermosillo told the court that while executing a search warrant on June 9, 2020, on the property of Vallow Daybell’s husband Chad, a patch of grass that was shorter than the areas in the yard caught his attention.
Hermosillo said the Evidence Recovery Team (ERT) started to remove the top layer of soil, which helped “expose three large white rocks and at that point, there was a strong odor of, through my training experience, a decomposing body.”
Two pieces of wood paneling had been placed under the rocks, and after removing them, the detective said his team noticed a change in the soil, which suddenly looked moist.
“We began to see a black, round object starting to protrude through the dirt. Just a few inches deep … it appeared to be like the texture of a plastic bag,” he said. Soon detectives observed, “It looked like the crown of a head protruding through the dirt.”
“They continued to dig around that … and eventually exposed what appeared to be a small body wrapped in black plastic,” he said, adding eventually they were able to see hair.
Prosecutors claim Vallow Daybell and her husband killed her children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and Tylee Ryan, 16, in September 2019 and buried them at the property. The 49-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the two first-degree murder charges. They also allege the couple killed Daybell’s ex-wife, Tammy, 49.
After discovering little JJ in the plastic bag, Hermosillo spoke about finding Tylee’s remains buried in a pet cemetery.
“There was another round blob of…just burnt flesh,” he said. The detective didn’t spare details, telling jurors about a “melted” green bucket with flesh and bones inside. After digging further, the ERT team found a “particular human skull underneath the melted bucket.”
“There were three or four of us that kind of climbed into this little hole and we attempted to lift it out but it kind of broke apart because it wasn’t really being held by anything,” he said of the skull.
Prosecutors said Monday Vallow Daybell craved “money, power and sex” and killed her two kids because they were “obstacles” to her wants.
The alleged murderer, wearing blue dress pants and a pink blouse in court, didn’t seem to be paying much attention in court when Hermosillo discussed finding the remains.
Her husband will face a seprate trial on the same charges, which will begin at a later date.
