As expected, Dermot Mulroney left his appearance on today’s episode of The View, politely getting up from the Hot Topics table to show support with the Writers Guild of America members who have now been on strike for seven weeks.
Variety first reported yesterday (June 22) that Mulroney would walk off today’s show, which was pre-recorded before its June 23 air date. During his interview to promote his new Marvel show, Secret Invasion, Mulroney stayed to answer all of the co-hosts’ questions — including a key debate about which was the better of his two films, The Wedding Date or My Best Friend’s Wedding — and only left once the show was about to cut to commercial.
Mulroney, who admitted he was “a little nervous” at the start of his interview, checked with the co-hosts to make sure his segment was coming to an end before announcing his walk-off.
He asked, “Are we going to break?” before getting confirmation and making a quick announcement.
“I want to do this symbolically. In support and solidarity with the writers, I’m gonna walk off your show. Thank you, I’ll see you on the picket lines,” Mulroney said, rising from his seat and walking off the set. Before fully disappearing, the actor turned to the audience and co-hosts and gave a wave, saying, “Love you, thank you.”
After he left, Joy Behar gave a shout-out to his series, telling the audience, “Dermot Mulroney. Marvel’s Secret Invasion is streaming now on Disney+. Check it out, we’ll be right back.”

The View has been keeping tabs on the writers strike since its very beginning, with moderator Whoopi Goldberg often reminding the audience of the striking writers and offering shout-outs and support.
A source previously told Decider The View is “primarily” unscripted, and noted that “the strike and impact have been mentioned regularly on the show by the co-hosts.”
They added, “A couple of writers are impacted, but we are not having anyone else doing their work during the strike.”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
