NextImg:Dennis Schroder quickly a ‘seamless fit’ in Nets’ three-guard lineup

For Dennis Schroder, the keyword was fast.

A ball-stopper earlier in his career, how quickly could he get off the ball and create for his new Nets teammates?

How quickly could he attack the game and push the pace playing alongside fellow backup Dennis Smith Jr.?

And eventually, how quickly will he speed up the learning curve and figure out how to play in Brooklyn’s backcourt alongside starter Ben Simmons?

Schroder exceeded expectations on the first two, with a spectacular debut to lead Saturday’s rout of San Antonio.

Now he’ll turn his attention to No. 3, as the Nets brace for a back-to-back against Boston.

“I told DSJ that for me it’s just to win basketball games and to be effective,” Schroder said. “I played a three-man point guard lineup in OKC back in the day.

“We can help each other pushing the ball. Whoever gets it, just push the ball. I think we can play faster, make sure we get into the paint and find open guys. We did that great [Saturday]. That was the second day we’ve been together. So, we’ve just got to keep going and keep getting better every single day.”

The Celtics, whom the Nets host Tuesday and visit on Wednesday, are a far cry from the sad-sack Spurs.

But Saturday’s debut bodes well.

Schroder had 15 points, 12 assists and just two turnovers coming off the bench, largely playing in three-guard lineups alongside Smith and Cam Thomas.

“I knew he was going to be a seamless fit,” Smith said. “He comes in and we allow him to be himself. There’s no ego, and he’s trying to win some games.”

He helped Brooklyn do just that, leading the Spurs by 28 en route to an easy 123-103 rout.

The Nets’ effective field goal percentage (66.1) and true shooting (67.0) were both their best of the season.

And much of that was Schroder, not just putting pressure on the paint but showing great decision-making.

“I wrote in my notes he’s always been a guy who holds the ball too long, but when he gets it out of his hands after the second dribble, he’s very dangerous. And this is an example.

“He was great. A pocket pass here, a quick decision there,” a Western Conference scout told The Post. “I hope he keeps this up, because this is amazing.”

That three-guard lineup playing alongside Nic Claxton and Jalen Wilson was plus-six in 8.7 minutes.

Schroder had a great pocket pass to Claxton for a dunk.

“His IQ, he’s been in the league for a while. He’s a seasoned vet, and he just made it easier for everybody including myself,” Claxton said. “Just the overall team, just playing fast, having a good flow, [Schroder] coming in and also just being another catalyst for our offense getting us going.

“He’s been in league for a while. I’m definitely gonna benefit a lot playing alongside him and I’m looking forward to building chemistry. … Pick-and-roll is universal. And I’ve also been in the league for a while … so I know when to slip out. I’m also ready in the pocket and I’m also really good at catching lobs.”

Like the alley-oop off a Schroder inbounds with 0.4 seconds left in the third quarter for the play of the night — or maybe the year for Brooklyn.

Next up is getting on the floor with Simmons, after they staggered all the point guard minutes.

After Schroder had flown back from celebrating his son’s birthday Sunday in Toronto, his first official practice Monday is a chance to work on playing alongside Simmons.

“We haven’t seen him with Ben,” Jacque Vaughn said. “I substituted and used Ben as the substitute for him, and we’ll see what that looks like going forward. But he gives us a lot of flexibility.”

Not that Simmons is worried about the learning curve.

“I think it’ll be simple,” Simmons said. “He’s already trying to push me now, really make sure I’m getting better each day. So it’s great having him, another leader on the team.”
