The smallest mom who ever lived. Actress Denise Welch, the mother of The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, just shaded Taylor Swift on Watch What Happens Live.
On Thursday night’s (July 24) episode of the Bravo talk show, host Andy Cohen asked Welch for her reaction to Swift writing a “whole album” about her short-lived relationship with Healy (to be fair, the entirety of “The Tortured Poets Department” wasn’t about him, though many fans have speculated that several songs are).
“Obviously, on pain of death can I talk about that episode. But not being her mother-in-law is a role that I’m glad that I lost,” Welch admitted, stunning Cohen and the audience. “Not that I have anything against her at all. It was tricky.”
“Listen, you’re not allowed to say anything and then she writes a whole album about it,” she continued. “But, Matty has taken it all in good grace. He’s very happy with his amazing fiancée Gabbriette, who is gorgeous. So, we’ve moved on.”
While Swift and Healy’s friendship dates back to 2014, it wasn’t until her split with Joe Alwyn in 2023 that they sparked a romance.
A source told The Sun in May 2023 that “she and Matty are madly in love,” adding, “It’s super-early days, but it feels right. They first dated, very briefly, almost 10 years ago, but timings just didn’t work out. Taylor and Joe actually split up back in February, so there was absolutely no crossover. Both Matty and Taylor have been touring over the past few weeks, so it’s been a lot of FaceTiming and texting, but she cannot wait to see him again.”
Healy was also spotted at several of Swift’s Eras Tour concerts, and they were later seen together at Casa Cipriani in New York City. What confirmed it all, however, was when Swift mouthed, “This is about you. You know who you are. I love you,” during a show, and Healy mouthed the same words at his concert around the same time.
In June 2023, it was reported that their relationship was over, and a month after that, Travis Kelce attended the Eras Tour for the first time, marking the start of a whirlwind romance with Swift that’s still going strong two years later.
While Welch might’ve been happy to let Swift go, we’re glad to see that Donna Kelce has stepped up to the role as her mother-in-law!
Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday through Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
